How the Journey Began...
WELCOME TO MDK! Let me take a moment to introduce myself… I’m Sheila, the owner and visionary of MadisonDavid Kollection, and I just love that you are here.
I am a lover of all things FASHION. Fashion has always been a part of me. I lived with my aunt in Ghana who was a seamstress. I was always up under her wings when she was sewing for the community out of her tiny sewing room. From about 11 years old I began to be captivated by the beauty of style – it’s uniqueness to each designer’s imagination, the fabrics – how they flow, the vibrant colours, and the art of transforming an ordinary piece of fabric into a work of art. I would sit for hours watching fashion shows on our small television in the living room, mesmerized by the way designers brought their visions to life on the runway! It was so much fun and it fueled my desire to become a model.
Modeling intrigued me—I loved the confidence and the elegance of the models I watched on the tv, and the way the clothes told a story with every step – The story? How rich Africa is as a country, how artistic we are as a people. I believe there are no limits to what we can do when we have a dream and use our imagination.
But my true passion lay in designing and creating my own works of art. I would take old clothing, forgotten pieces that I just wasn’t ready to get rid of, and I would create something fresh and stylish out of them. This started as a hobby, and grew into a personal love for fashion designing.
In 2012, I decided to try my hand at running my own craft business. I would make earrings and bowties (for the gents :-)). It was great! I was making a lot of sales and gaining traction. I really enjoyed what I was able to do. Then my family began and as a young mother, I needed to focus on building my family.
During the pandemic, when the world was in an uproar, I came back to my first love. I restarted the business, but this time I included pre-fab clothing and custom-made apparel. The journey hasn’t been easy. It wasn’t like before, and I found myself overwhelmed, tired, frustrated and I quit sooo many times. But I was determined to stick it out for my dream. Building something from the ground up requires patience, resilience, and an unshakable belief in oneself. I had all of the above except one – I was scared. There were so may challenges, and I had doubts, and moments of uncertainty. But through it all, I never stopped creating, learning, and pushing forward.
And what is so awesome, is I have My family as my biggest support system. They believed in me from the beginning when I needed encouragement, they stood by me in difficult times, and they celebrated every milestone – big or small. And above all, God has been my greatest strength—guiding me, uplifting me, and giving me the grace to keep going.
Today, MadisonDavid Kollection is more than just a brand – it’s my legacy. After my children were born, I decided that I wanted to leave them an inheritance that they could be proud of and take over the business someday. MDK is a dream turned reality – a reflection of my passion, and my testament to the power of perseverance. It is dedicated to dynamic and influential women who want to make a statement when they step out into the world —bold, elegant, and unapologetically STYLISH.
